WHAT THE HELL IS A GHERM?!
2/10/2024it may sound inappropriate, like some sick freak lingo for your wee wee, but fortunately (or unfortunately) it's not. it means sucking up to someone that you make them uncomfortable. well, that's not really the ACTUAL term and more like a simplification. the actual meaning, in the words of music wizard Matt Mahaffey: "Gherming is someone who gets backstage and is like asking you questions and just up in your grill [when] it's not the right time or place."
you're probably wondering how someone, from the other side of the globe, even found out about this word that's pretty much a niche to the city of Nashville.
and that's because i'm a gherm to sElf! I LOVE SELF! and i love Matt Mahaffey!
Matt Mahaffey and his wife Leticia Wolf had a little musical duo named "The Gherms" where they made songs about their love for They Might Be Giants. well, two songs, the two and only songs. it sucks that they ran out of time and were only able to make two songs because those two songs are just so WONDERFUL! two songs... (one more for good measure)
Acquired Taste is ouuuugh! i love the part in the end where Matt and Tish sing "THE WORLD IS IN LOVE AGAIN!" referencing the first song from TMBG's Flood "Theme from Flood" and the little "thank you!" in the end was really cute.
Apollopa never fails to make me sing "YEAH WE BONDED OVER APOLLO 18!" it's such a cute duet and i'm a sucker for love songs, it's my weakness.
i found out about The Gherms after listening to the Abandoned Album's Podcast about Breakfast with Girls (which you need to check out if you're one of the 12 people on earth that listens to sElf). i was like, "woah! extra sElf content!" - they need to bring Matt back to the pod because he's such an interesting and awesome guy. i'll probably write more about Matt and sElf in the next post or so where i'll talk about my favorite bands and musicians.
anyways, something about the word Gherm got stuck to me and it eventually became one of my favorite words. that lead to the name of the site: "GhermHQ"– a site with someone who gets too easily obsessed with any form of media, that's me!
i've been wanting to make a site like this for a long while now because i like to talk about stuff i like, and my Twitter really isn't the most post-heavy account which kinda takes the humanity out of me. you know, some artist on Twitter when they reach a certain amount of followers kinda just stop tweeting about stuff and just post their art, and those artist include me. mostly because no one wants to see me talking about Weezer 24/7. the horrible and painful truth is that no one cares about your opinions on music... well unless you're Fantano but every opinion he has is garbage and he's probably doing it on purpose.
i'm kidding, i hardly care about Mister Baldy Big Melonhead but i remember him and Billy Cobb did a debate between which is better, Pinkerton or the Blue Album, and Billy got his butt kicked like come on Billy Cobb! i was rooting for you!
i got nothing more to say so that concludes the very first GHERM post on GhermHQ! i'll probably cringe reading back at this in the future but i hope you enjoyed it. don't forget to check out The Gherms! they only have two songs so you can't make the excuse that you don't have the time.
