heya! turns out i'm not gonna give up on this site!
sorry about the lack of gherm posting but i've been working on my personal projects and school's been up my bum for the past couple of months so my schedule's pretty tight. i did have plans to review a certain musician and i have the draft saved on my computer but after hearing more info regarding the musician and their albums, i didn't really feel comfortable reviewing it. so you know what? screw that! let's talk about sElf!
sElf is a band that i keep obsessing over and telling people how horribly underrated they are. god do i love sElf, i discovered sElf through... *cough*
tally hall... and ever since then they became my favoritest-est band EVER!
one thing about sElf is how they can jumpscare you out of nowhere because you could be watching a movie like Shrek and BOOM! sElf performing the outro song
Stay Home. i remember rewatching Shrek and my jaw just dropping when i heard it like "MATT MAHAFFEY?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?". you've probably have heard at least one of sElf's songs like "Out With a Bang" which played as the intro music for Kitty0706's
Team Fabulous 2.
but let's talk albums, i haven't really fully listened to every single album, but i've listen to the best ones! starting it off with
SUBLIMINAL PLASTIC MOTIVES
sElf's debut, probably their most well known one before the Tally Hall fans came over and ravaged Gizmodgery. it's kind of funny looking at their debut seeing how wildly different it is from their more recent music which is leaning more onto TMBG territory. i mean the quirkiness of sElf is certainly still there but i can smell the Weezer wannabe sound these record labels from the mid 90s really wanted.
that's not to say the album sucks no far from it, it's great! while there are some songs that i find too "generic" or "snoozers" it's still a pretty solid album with songs like "So Low" being this cool angsty suicide song and more lax ones like "Marathon Shirt" which may be about a girl who does a lot of drugs and gets into a lot of fights... either that or Matt gets a lot of blood stains and crack cocaine on his Tony Hawk signed marathon shirt.
the closer to this album is awesome btw... like wow man, that's so cool.
overall, good solid debut, some snoozers but that's common in a lot of albums.
8/10 Favorite Song: So Low
GIZMODGERY
okay this album was my first exposure to sElf after watching that dreaded Tally Hall
south by southwest video. saw a comment about how underrated the band was and now i'm here gushing and gherming about it. god i love this band, did you know i love this band?
anyways, Gizmodgery, an album supposedly made entirely out of toys, if i remember correctly there was a rule where they couldn't exceed past 20 dollars with their instruments and there was a lot of cheating and stuff? i don't know, i'm probably paraphrasing a random YouTube comment or a forum thread from 2007 but who cares! it sounds great!
it's sounds toyish (duh) and that's incredibly apparent from the opener where they had an elmo doll repeatedly say
"LETS MAKE SOME NOISE WITH SOME POTS AND PANS!"
i love this album a lot, it's such a unique sound and i honestly can't think of any other album that has the same sound as this. such good songs like Dead Man, 9 Lives, Resurrect, and Trunk Fulla Amps where they just say they have a trunk fulla amps for three minutes AND IT WORKS! this is where sElf's quirkiness really shines, they had an entire song where a guy goes to a blind date with a blind girl who is sexually attracted to transistors for some reason. good album, might even be their best!
10/10 Favorite song: Dead Man
BREAKFAST WITH GIRLS
Breakfast With THE G, THE I, THE R, THE L, THE S-S! this is where my ICONIC bio in every social media site comes from which is "Better Than Aliens", a really sweet song about a guy saying to a girl that her love is better than aliens and then getting abducted by aliens. i don't know where i heard it but i remember Matt talked about this song and how he used aliens because it's saying how aliens, creatures from out of this world are here, and yet, your love is somehow more better than people coming from outer space and changing our lives forever.
Breakfast With Girls is an album i adore a lot, it's awesome and so sweet. you could have a really sweet love song like the "Uno Song" to this hard hitting cool and badass song about wanting a car and a nine-to-five job. please listen to it, it's so cool, and this album is COOL! it's so good i can't even think of anything bad to say about it.
11/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Favorite song: Better Than Aliens
ORNAMENT AND CRIME
Ornament and Crime, if Gizmodgery fans found sElf through Tally Hall then Ornament and Crime fans found sElf through Team Fortress 2. Matt considers this album as a follow up to Breakfast With Girls, like a Breakfast With Girls 2, but is it as good as Breakfast With Girls? nah... it's not BAD! i love this album! but there's like 3 songs in this album i really really like and the rest felt kind of generic or too samey. i will say though, the closer to this album is really god damn funny. another funny thing is how Matt made a short jingle about Ornament and Crime having
no more B-Sides after the album got delayed and thrashed.
maybe i need to listen to this album more to appreciate it but right now, for me, it's a
6/10 Favorite song: Pathetic Song
SUPER FAKE NICE
oh my 2014, it's been almost 10 YEARS SINCE sElf MADE AN ALBUM! i'm so sad, but i remember Matt is working on another sElf album so i'm happy again. I WILL BE THERE DAY ONE MATT MAHAFFEY!
Super Fake Nice is a hell of a lot more poppy than normal sElf especially with Runaway. i love the music video for Runaway, it's just cats being silly and stuff hehe. this album is pretty short, it's not even an album! it's an EP! but it was supposed to be an album but it got scrapped and turned into an EP which is sad because the B-Sides are AWESOME! Monogamy, Could You Love Me Now, Sucked Out The Center, WHY!!! i'm sad again.
but Super Fake Nice is okay, it's definitely a lot more different from regular sElf but it's still great!
8/10 Favorite song: Runaway
that concludes all the sElf albums i've listened to. i know it's not the full discography, i haven't listened to Half-Baked Serenades or the countless unreleased B-Sides they have. but i will be a forever be a sElfie! AS IN sElf FAN BEFORE THEY TOOK THAT TITLE AWAY FROM US! i'm sad sElf is pretty unheard of because Matt is a musical genius and i love his style so much. i really hope sElf starts slowly snowballing into popularity, i mean if Tally Hall could do it then surely sElf can right?
i love you sElf... i will forever be your bbg...
